Test it Tuesday: hs-CRP

๐Ÿ”ฌ What is hs-CRP—and Why Should You Care?

When it comes to health, especially cancer prevention, most people wait until symptoms appear. But what if we could catch the earliest whispers of imbalance before disease takes hold? That’s where hs-CRP steps in—a quiet but powerful biomarker that can help you understand what's happening beneath the surface.

hs-CRP stands for high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, a blood test that detects subtle levels of inflammation in your body. Unlike standard CRP tests that measure acute inflammation (like with an infection), the high-sensitivity version picks up on low-grade, chronic inflammation. And that kind of inflammation has been strongly linked to a higher risk of chronic diseases—including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and autoimmune conditions.

๐ŸŒฟ Why Inflammation Matters in Cancer Prevention

Inflammation is your body’s natural defense mechanism—but when it becomes chronic, it acts like a slow-burning fire, damaging cells, mutating DNA, and setting the stage for tumor growth. Studies have shown that elevated hs-CRP levels are associated with increased cancer risk, especially in cancers of the colon, breast, lung, and prostate.

By checking your hs-CRP levels regularly, you’re giving yourself a deeper view of your internal terrain. It's a peek into the terrain before the storm. When this number is elevated—even in someone who feels perfectly healthy—it’s a call to action, not panic. It tells us that your body may be silently inflamed and asking for support.

๐Ÿ“‰ What’s a Healthy hs-CRP Level?

  • Optimal: less than 1.0 mg/L
  • Mild risk: 1.0–3.0 mg/L
  • High risk: greater than 3.0 mg/L

It’s important to test when you’re not acutely sick, as illness can temporarily elevate CRP levels. If your numbers are high and you’re not experiencing an infection or injury, it’s time to dig deeper.

๐Ÿงฌ What to Do If Your hs-CRP is Elevated

The beauty of hs-CRP is that it's modifiable. Lifestyle and nutrition can make a significant impact:

  • ๐ŸŒฑ Anti-inflammatory diet (high in fiber, phytonutrients, omega-3s)
  • ๐Ÿ’ช Movement to regulate insulin and immune function
  • ๐Ÿง˜‍♀️ Stress management—chronic stress is inflammatory
  • ๐ŸŒฟ Targeted supplements like Curcumin, Red Yeast Rice, omega-3s, and medicinal mushrooms
  • ๐Ÿงช And most importantly… retesting to track your progress

❤️ The Takeaway

Checking your hs-CRP is a simple, affordable, and powerful way to take control of your health. It doesn’t diagnose cancer—but it gives us insight into the terrain that cancer can thrive in. In my practice, I use it as one of many tools to assess cancer risk, monitor inflammatory load, and build personalized prevention plans.

Don’t wait for a diagnosis to start caring about your health. Prevention isn’t passive—it’s proactive.

This is what Test It Tuesday is all about: educating, empowering, and helping you take the next right step toward wellness.

Supplement Sunday Spotlight: Red Yeast Rice—Nature’s Gentle Cholesterol Support

๐ŸŒฟ Supplement Sunday Spotlight: Red Yeast Rice—Nature’s Gentle Cholesterol Support

When we think about heart health, most people jump straight to cholesterol. But what if I told you that some of the most powerful ways to support your heart—and your cancer prevention journey—are found not in a prescription bottle, but in the natural world? This week, we're spotlighting Red Yeast Rice, a supplement that’s been used for centuries and now stands at the intersection of tradition and modern science.

๐Ÿ’Š What is Red Yeast Rice?

Red Yeast Rice is exactly what it sounds like: a type of fermented rice cultivated with the yeast Monascus purpureus. During fermentation, it produces a compound called monacolin K, which has a similar structure to the active ingredient in statin medications. This means it has the ability to naturally inhibit the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase—the same one statins target to reduce cholesterol.

But unlike synthetic statins, Red Yeast Rice (when used correctly and from high-quality sources) is generally gentler and less likely to cause the harsh side effects that many people experience with prescription drugs.

❤️ Why I Recommend It

Red Yeast Rice supports the body in regulating LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, reducing triglycerides, and in some cases, gently improving HDL (“good”) cholesterol. But what really makes this supplement stand out is its ability to impact inflammation, too. Since chronic inflammation is a driving force behind many degenerative diseases, including cancer, anything we can do to modulate it matters deeply.

What I especially love is how Red Yeast Rice connects to our functional approach—it doesn’t just suppress symptoms. It supports the body in restoring balance.

๐Ÿงช Pairing With Biomarkers: Why This Ties Into hs-CRP

Just like we’re highlighting in Test It Tuesday, inflammation markers like hs-CRP give us a window into hidden stress in the body. Elevated hs-CRP has been linked to cardiovascular disease and cancer. Red Yeast Rice may help lower hs-CRP by reducing inflammatory lipids and promoting smoother blood vessel function. It’s not just about lowering a number—it’s about creating an internal environment where health can thrive.

๐ŸŒฑ Choosing the Right Red Yeast Rice

This part matters. Not all Red Yeast Rice supplements are created equal. Many products on the market are contaminated with citrinin, a mycotoxin that can damage the kidneys. Always choose a citrinin-free, third-party tested brand—this is non-negotiable in my practice.

I also often recommend pairing Red Yeast Rice with CoQ10, as it can help offset any potential depletion of this important antioxidant and mitochondrial nutrient.

✨ Final Thoughts

Red Yeast Rice is a beautiful example of how nature provides us with tools to care for our bodies in a holistic way. It supports not only cardiovascular wellness but also contributes to lowering systemic inflammation, one of the root drivers of cancer and chronic disease. It’s gentle, effective, and deeply aligned with the functional medicine model.

So this Sunday, take a moment to think about the small, daily choices that create long-term resilience. Supplements like Red Yeast Rice aren’t a quick fix—but they’re a step in the direction of intentional wellness.

The Truth About Integrative Cancer Support & Prevention

The Truth About Integrative Cancer Support & Prevention

Cancer is one of the most feared diagnoses in the world, but what if we changed the way we approached it? What if instead of waiting for a diagnosis, we focused on prevention? And for those already navigating cancer, what if we looked beyond conventional treatments and took a whole-body approach to healing? This is where integrative cancer support comes in.

What is Integrative Cancer Support?

Integrative cancer support is a comprehensive approach that combines conventional medicine with evidence-based holistic therapies. It is not about replacing standard treatments like chemotherapy or radiation, but rather enhancing them to support the body, improve outcomes, and promote healing. Collaboration with oncologists is essential in ensuring the best care for each patient. This approach includes:

  • Nutritional support – Anti-inflammatory, plant-based foods that fuel the body and fight cancer growth.

  • Detoxification – Reducing toxic burden from heavy metals, chemicals, and processed foods.

  • Stress management – Incorporating mindfulness, meditation, and breathwork to lower inflammation.

  • Physical movement – Encouraging circulation, lymphatic drainage, and overall vitality.

  • Immune optimization – Strengthening the body’s natural defenses through lifestyle modifications.

Why Prevention is Powerful

The idea that cancer is purely genetic is outdated. In reality, lifestyle choices and environmental factors play a significant role in cancer development. The science of epigenetics has shown that we have the power to influence our genes through:

  • Diet – A nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory diet can significantly lower cancer risk.

  • Toxin reduction – Avoiding pesticides, plastics, and other environmental toxins supports cellular health.

  • Mindset and stress management – Chronic stress contributes to inflammation, which is a key driver of disease.

  • Quality sleep – The body repairs itself at night, making restorative sleep a crucial part of prevention.

  • Collaboration with oncologists – A joint effort between patients, integrative specialists, and oncologists ensures the best prevention and treatment outcomes.

What You Can Do Today

Taking charge of your health doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start with small, sustainable steps:

  1. Incorporate more whole foods – Swap out processed meals for fresh, organic ingredients.

  2. Prioritize hydration – Drink filtered water to support detoxification.

  3. Reduce alcohol intake – Limit consumption to lower cancer risk.

  4. Move daily – Even a short walk can improve circulation and boost immunity.

  5. Manage stress – Find a practice that helps you unwind, whether it’s meditation, journaling, or spending time in nature.

  6. Consult with healthcare professionals – Work with oncologists and integrative specialists to create a comprehensive wellness plan.

Final Thoughts

Cancer support and prevention are not just about medicine—they’re about lifestyle, choices, and empowerment. By taking a proactive approach and working alongside oncologists, you can reduce your risk and support your body’s ability to heal. If you’re looking for guidance, consider working with an integrative cancer specialist who can help create a personalized plan for you.

Remember, health is not just the absence of disease—it is the presence of vitality. Let’s take charge of it together.

From ‘Impossible’ to ‘I’m Possible’: A Message of Hope for Cancer Fighters

When someone hears the word "cancer" for the first time, it can feel like their entire world has stopped. It’s a word that carries weight—fear, uncertainty, and sometimes even hopelessness. But what if we could challenge the way we think about cancer? What if we could redefine the word ‘impossible’ that so often finds its way into conversations about this disease?

David Beckham once said, “Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men.” It’s not a fact; it’s an opinion. And in my work with oncology patients, I’ve learned that nothing could be closer to the truth. I’ve seen ‘impossible’ transform into ‘I’m possible’ through the power of personalized care, hope, and a willingness to fight.

The Power of Hope in the Fight Against Cancer

Hope is not a trivial thing. It’s a lifeline. It’s what gives patients the strength to wake up every morning and take the next step in their journey. Unfortunately, so many of the patients I meet come to me after being told their situation is hopeless. They’ve been handed a diagnosis without a roadmap, a prognosis without possibilities.

But the truth is, cancer is not a death sentence. It’s a challenge, yes, but one that can be faced with the right mindset, tools, and support system. The human body is incredibly resilient and, when given the right environment, it can heal in extraordinary ways.

Redefining ‘Impossible’ Through Integrative Care

In my practice, I’ve had the honor of walking alongside patients as they take their first steps toward wellness. Together, we focus on what can be done. For some, it means strengthening the immune system through clean, plant-based nutrition. For others, it’s about detoxifying the body to create an environment where cancer can’t thrive. And for many, it’s a combination of therapies—addressing not just the physical body but also the mind and spirit.

Integrative care is about seeing the whole person, not just their diagnosis. It’s about finding the root causes of disease and addressing them holistically. This might mean mindfulness practices to reduce stress, personalized supplements to restore balance, or simply offering the encouragement that someone is walking this journey with them.

Prevention: The Other Side of the Equation

Hope isn’t just for those who are already fighting cancer. It’s also for those who want to prevent it. There is so much we can do to lower our risk through lifestyle changes. Clean eating, regular movement, and mindfulness practices can all contribute to creating a body that is inhospitable to disease.

Cancer prevention isn’t about fear; it’s about empowerment. It’s about taking control of what we can and making choices that align with a vibrant, healthy life.

A Community of Support

One of the most important things I tell my patients is this: You are not alone. Whether you’re on a journey of healing or prevention, you have a community of support that believes in you. Together, we can redefine what’s possible. We can challenge the word ‘impossible’ and replace it with hope, vitality, and strength.

David Beckham’s words remind us that impossible is nothing more than a word. You are bigger and braver than you think. Cancer does not define you. It’s a chapter in your story, but it’s not the ending. It’s the beginning of something powerful, something filled with hope and the possibility of healing.

Let’s Redefine What’s Possible Together

If you’re walking this path, know that I am here for you. My mission is to provide you with the tools, knowledge, and support you need to thrive. Let’s rewrite the narrative around cancer. Let’s replace fear with hope and impossibility with empowerment.

Visit LifeWellnessForever.com to learn more about how we can work together to redefine what’s possible. Hope is not just a feeling; it’s a way forward. And it starts today.

The Big 4: Foods to Avoid for Better Health

The Big 4: Foods to Avoid for Better Health
When it comes to maintaining optimal health and reducing your risk of chronic illnesses, including cancer, there are four food categories you should steer clear of entirely. These foods are known to trigger inflammatory responses in the body, disrupt hormonal balance, and, in some cases, fuel the growth of harmful cells. Here's why eliminating these items from your diet is essential:
1. Dairy
From milk to cheese, dairy products can contribute to hormonal imbalances due to the presence of growth hormones and other bioactive substances. Studies suggest dairy may promote inflammation and create an environment conducive to disease progression.
2. Sugar
Refined sugar is one of the most harmful substances you can consume. It spikes blood sugar levels, disrupts insulin regulation, and creates conditions that promote cancer cell growth. Cancer cells thrive on sugar, making it a major driver of disease.
3. Processed Oils
Industrial oils like canola, soybean, and corn oil are highly refined and stripped of nutrients. These oils are often high in omega-6 fatty acids, which, in excess, can lead to chronic inflammation—a precursor for many diseases, including cancer.
4. Wheat
Modern wheat has been heavily modified and often contains high levels of gluten, which can irritate the gut lining and promote inflammation. For many people, wheat can trigger autoimmune responses, increasing the risk of chronic disease.
By avoiding these "Big 4" food categories, you can take a proactive approach to health. Eliminating these items not only reduces the risk of cancer but also promotes overall vitality and well-being.

The Benefits of CoQ10

The Benefits of CoQ10-
Today we are talking about the supplement CoQ10.
What is CoQ10?
CoQ10 is a compound whose job is to help cells generate energy. Although you can find it in supplement form at the store or online (more on that later), it is naturally produced by the body.
Your body stores this compound in the mitochondria of your cells. The mitochondria uses CoQ10 to generate energy (ATP) and protect cells from damage and disease.
Unfortunately, however, as you age, the production of CoQ10 declines. It also declines with chronic stress, toxin exposures, and certain medications. The decreased amount of CoQ10 in your cells contributes to the gradual loss of energy that most of us experience in our thirties and beyond.
If you think you are deficient in Coenzyme Q10—and if you are in your thirties or older, you’re probably right—you can increase your intake through both choosing CoQ10-rich foods and high-quality supplementation.
Although CoQ10 plays a key role in the body, most healthy people have enough CoQ10 naturally. There is some evidence that adding more -- in the form of CoQ10 supplements -- may be beneficial. Increasing age and some medical conditions are associated with dropping levels of CoQ10.
CoQ10 has been tested in clinical trials and found beneficial in several medical conditions that have relevance for a person with diabetes, including diabetes itself, insulin resistance, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, and endothelial dysfunction (an abnormality of the lining of blood vessels)
There are a number of foods that are high in the compound, including
Organ meats like heart, liver, and kidney
Wild-caught cold-water fish like trout, herring, and mackerel
Vegetables like spinach, cauliflower, and broccoli
Fruits like strawberries and oranges
Nuts and seeds
Even with a healthy diet, however, it can be hard to get all of the nutrients you need through food alone. This is especially true if you have gut issues and are not able to absorb vital nutrients and vitamins. If you want to beef up your CoQ10 intake, consider taking a high-quality supplement. When it comes to dosage, I find most people do well with between 100mg and 200mg daily.
If you on Statin medications, which are commonly prescribed today for high cholesterol (and considered standard of care for cardiovascular protection in diabetes) these medications do deplete CoQ10 levels in the body.
There are a few cases where taking CoQ10 supplements could be risky—for instance, people on blood thinners or thyroid medication. Always check with your Functional Medicine practitioner before starting a supplement or if you have questions or concerns about taking any supplement.

Hormones

Today we are talking about Hormones

The first step toward healthy hormones is to develop a basic comprehension of what your endocrine system is, how it works, what disrupts it, and how it strives for balance by using its natural intelligence. Having some understanding of hormone function is imperative for knowing your fluctuations and how to leverage them. This will help you optimize your endocrine system as a whole, through daily choices.

Hormones are chemical messengers that are constantly striving to keep balance in your body by helping regulate growth and development, metabolism, appetite, digestion, sleep cycles, reproductive functions, stress response, and mood.

Hormones influence your hunger levels, heart rate, temperature, weight, skin, hair growth, brain function, mood, libido, energy levels, stress levels, sleep quality, immunity, ovulation, and menstruation.

Common Signs and symptoms of Hormone Imbalance-

Skin, Hair, and Body- acne, oily skin, dry skin, eczema, skin rashes, hair loss, extra body hair, night sweats, hot flashes, blurred vision, vaginal dryness, and night sweats

Digestion and Elimination Pathways-

Bloating, constipation, diarrhea, loose stools, irritable bowel syndrome, water retention, weight gain, inflammation

PMS and Menstrual Cycle-

Cramping, breast tenderness or swelling, spotting, irregular periods, mood swings, depression, fatigue, mental fog, PCOS, and ovarian cysts

Lifeguard Or Swim Instructor- Dr. Cindy Ross

I heard this saying the other day, “Lifeguard or Swim Instructor” and it really resonated with me.

Today's topic is do you want a Lifeguard or Swim Instructor?

In the ever-growing, ever-changing world of health offers, it can start to become difficult to know what sort of help you may want or need.

There May Be Overlaps, but in a General Sense:

๐ŸŠ‍♀️Consider doctors like lifeguards. They are very good at acute issues, emergencies, and helping you immediately when you are drowning or suffering.

๐Ÿคฟ But functional Medicine doctors who specialize in nutrition (what I do) are more like swim instructors. It’s advanced training beyond standard Dietetics. They get in the water with you. They teach you the basics and then help you refine more and more. Have a health issue? They’ll adapt the instructions for you. Want to optimize your swim energy? They can get into the nuances. Overall, the goal is to make it so you will have less and less need for the lifeguard, and instead guide you to become a stronger swimmer, taking it as advanced as you want to go.

✅Are great when your doctor says “everything is normal” but you don’t feel like it!

✅Will spend more time getting a full history and hearing your full story

✅Will use research-backed lab tests to see what is going on, at a deep root-cause level

✅Personalize recommendations to you based on the data

✅Address the root cause, rather than just treating symptoms

✅May utilize supplements in short-term therapeutic ways to rebalance your body

✅Shouldn’t keep you on a restricted diet long-term

✅Should help you create a long-term game plan, and guide you into sustaining your results.
