Understanding the Keto Diet: Health Impacts, Guidelines, and Recipes

https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1r7Ds0P4_N3Jb-ajLDxuTWMtctKIWCdKC
With its promise of rapid weight loss and improved energy levels, the ketogenic or "keto" diet has attracted substantial attention in recent years. Despite the hype, many are still left wondering what the keto diet really is, how it impacts health, and how to properly follow it. In this post, we delve into the keto diet, its pros and cons, and share some delicious keto-friendly recipes.

**Understanding the Keto Diet: What It Is and How It Works**

The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, moderate-protein, and very low-carb diet. It typically involves consuming 70-75% of your calories from fat, 20% from protein, and only 5-10% from carbohydrates. The goal is to push your body into a metabolic state called "ketosis," where it uses fat, rather than glucose from carbs, as its primary source of energy. This is achieved by drastically reducing your carbohydrate intake and significantly increasing your fat intake.

**Health Impacts: Pros and Cons, and the Latest Scientific Findings**

The keto diet has been linked with several potential health benefits and drawbacks. On the positive side, it may lead to quick weight loss, improved blood sugar control, and reduced insulin levels, which can be beneficial for those with obesity, type 2 diabetes, or prediabetes. However, it's important to note that while the initial rapid weight loss often seen with a keto diet is primarily due to water loss.

On the downside, the keto diet can cause side effects, known as the "keto flu", which may include headache, fatigue, and nausea, especially in the early stages. There are also concerns about nutrient deficiencies due to the elimination of certain food groups and the long-term impact on heart health due to high saturated fat intake.

Latest scientific findings are mixed. Some studies suggest the diet can be safe and effective for short-term weight loss, while others warn of increased heart disease risk and other health issues over the long term. As research continues, it's vital to consult with a healthcare provider or a nutritionist before starting a ketogenic diet.

**How to Follow a Keto Diet: Guidelines, Tips, and Common Pitfalls to Avoid**

When following a keto diet, the key is to drastically reduce carbohydrate intake. This means avoiding high-carb foods like grains, sugary foods, and most fruits. Instead, you should focus on eating foods high in healthy fats, such as avocados, olive oil, and fatty fish, as well as moderate amounts of protein.

Staying hydrated and getting enough electrolytes is also important to help prevent side effects associated with the keto flu. Moreover, even though fat will be your main calorie source, it's still important to focus on the quality of fats, prioritizing monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats over saturated fats where possible.

A common pitfall to avoid is neglecting fiber intake. While many high-fiber foods are also high in carbs and therefore limited on a keto diet, there are still plenty of low-carb, high-fiber foods you can eat, such as leafy greens, nuts, and seeds.

**Delicious Keto Recipes: A Few Simple, Tasty Keto-Friendly Recipes**

1. **Keto Avocado Spinach Smoothie:**
Blend together one ripe avocado, a handful of spinach, one cup of unsweetened almond milk, and a few ice cubes. Add a low-carb sweetener if desired.

2. **Almond Crusted Salmon:**
Coat salmon fillets in a mixture of crushed almonds, garlic powder, and olive oil. Bake until salmon is cooked through.

3. **Cauliflower "Mac" and Cheese:**
Cook cauliflower florets until tender, then mix with cream, cheddar cheese, and your choice of seasonings. Bake until golden and bubbly.

In conclusion, while the keto diet offers potential benefits, it also comes with potential risks and should not be started without proper guidance. Always consult with a healthcare provider or a nutritionist before making any major changes to your diet. Happy eating!

The Importance of Reading Food Labels

The Importance of Reading Food Labels

It shows you some key nutrients that impact your health. You can use the label to support your personal dietary needs – look for foods that contain more of the nutrients you want to get more of and less of the nutrients you may want to limit. Nutrients to get less of: Saturated Fat, Sodium, and Added Sugars.

Aiming for a healthy diet isn't just about cutting down on calories or limiting your food intake. A very essential step towards a healthy diet and lifestyle also includes paying attention to the food labels before you pick up anything from the grocery store. It is important to know where your food comes from and what it contains. The labels on packaged foods give you all the information on nutrition contents that the foods have, which also makes it easier for you to compare between different brands before you buy them. Additionally, there are some really amazing benefits of reading food labels.

Food labels provide information that's vital for your diet.

The two key things that food labels offer in terms of information include ingredients as well as the nutrition content. The latter gives well-defined segregation of what amounts of calories, total fats, saturated fats, carbohydrates, proteins, and vitamins the food contains. This information is extremely crucial when you're planning to make some dietary changes with some additions and restrictions to your daily diet. It also helps you reject certain food items if you have an intolerance or allergy towards certain ingredients, such as dairy, nuts, etc.

It helps you plan your diet well if you are suffering from chronic conditions.

With increasing cases of hypertension, diabetes, and other cardiovascular diseases, it's imperative to cut back on your salt and sugar intake. Reading labels while buying packaged foods helps you effortlessly cut back on these components without fail so that your health never has to suffer. Keep a watch on the 'total carbs' content as carbohydrates to ultimately turn into sugar during the digestion process.

Now that you know some of the key reasons you should be reading labels on packaged foods before adding them to your cart, make sure you do that on your next visit to the grocery store. What's more important on Valentine's Day than your heart?

https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1wvqMlr03wFsf2a5MZkBJARbcNfTyO1EH

Valentine’s Day is the time of year to celebrate love and romance, but your heart plays a vital role every single day of your life. Its main job is to keep the blood pumping around your body - though it may beat faster when you’re with that special someone! It's important we do what we can to protect our hearts and keep them healthy.

So how can we look after our hearts?

1. Stop smoking

By not smoking you can protect your heart and blood vessels from damage.

2. Stay physically active

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity a week with muscle strengthening exercises at least two days a week. This will help to keep that blood pumping!

3. Cut back on salt

Lowering your salt intake to 6g a day or less can help lower your blood pressure, meaning your heart doesn’t have to work overtime to get your blood going.

4. Eat a balanced diet

This will help control your weight and keep your cholesterol levels down. Your diet should be low in saturated fat, filled with high-fiber foods, fruit and vegetables and lean protein sources.

Following these tips can help reduce your risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). CVD is when your arteries begin to develop fatty plaques which reduce the amount of blood that can get through which can lead to the development of a blood clot, heart attack or stroke. Heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death on the island of Ireland and worldwide so it is important we do what we can to protect our hearts and keep them strong and healthy.

Some other risk factors that may increase your risk of developing cardiovascular disease include being over 40, being male, having a family history of heart disease or being from certain ethnic backgrounds. Now these factors we have no control over, so it is important we do all we can to reduce our risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

So, this Valentine’s Day, get physically active by going on a walk together. Have a home-cooked meal together such as salmon and your favorite greens for some heart-healthy fats and forgo the chocolates.

Kids And Nutrition

Our kids are sicker than ever before!

For the first time in our history, kids of today will be the first generation expected to have shorter lives than their parents.

Even though there are multiple factors at play, the biggest one is the food that they eat.

We have a broken food system in America where it is now normal to eat food-like products instead of real food.

These food-like products are ultra-processed, highly inflammatory, and are unrecognizable to our bodies.

On top of this, these foods are sprayed with chemicals, grown in soil that is depleted of nutrients and have ingredients added to them that did not exist 20 years ago.

With food like this, it is no wonder that kids are so sick.

What is the fix for this?

Getting back to eating real, whole, unprocessed foods that humans have been eating for thousands of years and eliminating the ultra-processed foods that are consumed today.

Food may only be part of the solution, but it is a major part and has the biggest impact when it comes to our kids' health.

Lifeguard Or Swim Instructor- Dr. Cindy Ross

I heard this saying the other day, “Lifeguard or Swim Instructor” and it really resonated with me.

Today's topic is do you want a Lifeguard or Swim Instructor?

In the ever-growing, ever-changing world of health offers, it can start to become difficult to know what sort of help you may want or need.

There May Be Overlaps, but in a General Sense:

🏊‍♀️Consider doctors like lifeguards. They are very good at acute issues, emergencies, and helping you immediately when you are drowning or suffering.

🤿 But functional Medicine doctors who specialize in nutrition (what I do) are more like swim instructors. It’s advanced training beyond standard Dietetics. They get in the water with you. They teach you the basics and then help you refine more and more. Have a health issue? They’ll adapt the instructions for you. Want to optimize your swim energy? They can get into the nuances. Overall, the goal is to make it so you will have less and less need for the lifeguard, and instead guide you to become a stronger swimmer, taking it as advanced as you want to go.

𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰ine 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀:

✅Are great when your doctor says “everything is normal” but you don’t feel like it!

✅Will spend more time getting a full history and hearing your full story

✅Will use research-backed lab tests to see what is going on, at a deep root-cause level

✅Personalize recommendations to you based on the data

✅Address the root cause, rather than just treating symptoms

✅May utilize supplements in short-term therapeutic ways to rebalance your body

✅Shouldn’t keep you on a restricted diet long-term

✅Should help you create a long-term game plan, and guide you into sustaining your results.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 Medicine Doctors 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 – 𝗳𝗶𝘅 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀, 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲.

Vitamin D And Functional Medicine

Today I want to talk about Vitamin D

What does Vitamin D do for us?

Why is vitamin D important?

1. Reduces risk of cancer

2. Supports your bone density

3. Suppresses inflammation

4. Supports your immune system

5. Supports your heart

1. The most efficient way to get Vit D is to lay with your bare skin in the early sun (approx 15-20 minutes daily, it’s important to not burn).

2. Test your Vit D levels regularly because genetics have a big impact on your Vit D levels and how you respond to supplements as well as sunlight. If you supplement with Vit D, please work with a functional medicine doctor to make sure the dosage is right.

3. Supplement with Vitamin D, depending on your levels you will need to add in 1000-5000 IUs a day. Remember it’s extremely important to know how your body is absorbing vitamins and nutrients.

What are you doing to get your Vit D?

It’s Time To Fix Your Insulin Resistance- Dr. Cindy Ross

Today let’s talk about Blood Sugar- Are you holding the extra weight in your midsection and no matter what you are doing it’s not budging? More than likely you are having a metabolic dysfunction.

It’s time to fix your blood sugar.

Most people don't realize that insulin resistance and pre-diabetes can lead to heart attacks, strokes, dementia, cancer, impotence, and more than likely develop full-blown diabetes within a couple of years.

Fixing your blood sugar and controlling insulin levels is the best way to live a long healthy

life. Here are some tips: Eliminate refined sugar and starches or significantly cut down on them. This means

cutting out muffins, bagels, cereals, pasta, candy, and pastries. Focus on non-starchy plant foods, protein, fats, and small amounts of whole grains and starchy vegetables like sweet potato.

If you think you may have a blood sugar issue and you want to get a functional blood chemistry analysis done to optimize your health contact me today at 251-949-2220 or visit www.lifewellnessforever.com

Dr. Cindy Ross- What Is Functional Blood Chemistry Analysis?

Comprehensive Bio-Screen Blood Test + Urinalysis with Functional Blood Chemistry Analysis

Did you get your annual exam and lab where your doctor told you everything looks fine?

Are you curious if this is really true? Did you just receive your lab report without comment?

Would you like to prevent disease and health challenges?

If you answered yes, then let’s get started.

Knowledge is power and you deserve to understand what is happening inside your body.

The core reason why Life Wellness Forever exists is to improve the health and future well-being of every patient she encounters. Dr. Cindy Ross, DNM, BCHN, CNP, Ph.D. specializes in functional blood chemistry analysis, which takes a deeper look into what blood chemistry reveals. In doing so, Dr. Cindy has been able to help her patients prevent worsening symptoms, reverse and control existing conditions, and in enough time, even remission can be achieved.

Dr. Cindy’s reference ranges are different from those in your doctor’s lab. The ranges used in determining your risk factors come from averaging millions of sick people’s results every few years. Conditions range in severity to chronic, age-onset, and acute to chronic, which are rarely markers of health. Additional ranges come from functional medicine, and are more narrow, so findings can occur years before you may receive a diagnosis or notice a symptom. This is preventive medicine working for you, in the purest form.

Dr. Cindy’s comprehensive method utilizes different ranges based on health rather than illness. Even if your doctor said you are within “normal” ranges, that doesn’t mean everything is healthy. You could be a tenth of a point away from a disease pattern. However, you will not know you’re in danger until your marker goes further into the red.

The standard Dr. Cindy sets at Life Wellness Forever is that you deserve better, therefore, she has been able to identify patterns of imbalance and illness with as few as 10 markers.

Dr. Cindy can see many things your regular physician isn’t trained to look for—which could save you money, time, and energy. She can identify the root cause of current symptoms or prevent future suffering.

Thank you Beverly for the feature in your publication-
From No Nonsense Magazine- Vol 23 #1

I hope to inspire everyone to live to their fullest and happiest potential. I tell people of all ages, —“It’s never too late to be great.” You can rediscover yourself at any time. We all have setbacks in life, but you just
have to pick yourself up and start believing that you can begin to live your best life now. Since I learned to control my disease with nutrition, exercise, and proper supplementation, at the age of 41, I have never

I recently met my 16-year-old self again at the age of 40 and even though the journey has had a lot of bumps and bruises, I’m still here, and I’m smiling because I am alive and looking forward to the sunrise of each new day.

Thunder Thighs!

Hi guys...

Well, I am dedicating this blog to all the women who have thunder thighs...
I have battled my legs my entire life and after a year of heavy weight training and lots of stair climbing, I am happy to say, I am proud to have "In Shape" Thunder Thighs. Ladies, it's time to work!

I spent countless hours running for years trying to get the cellulite off my thighs and it never worked. It didn't matter how thin I became, I could still see dimples. 👎

Don't be afraid of the weights as I once was! I have always been scared to grow my legs because I was teased throughout my life for having "Thunder Thighs".

7 Weeks from Battle on the Bluff and I'm still feeling great. 40 min of stair climbing a day plus weight training and I'm netting around 800 calories a day after my workouts.

Afternoon Cardio Session

Who is else is thrilled Summer is approaching, I could spend every minute of every day outside.
Really looking forward to enjoying the season here in Orange Beach.

I'm getting questions daily about supplements, nutrition, and my workouts.
I promise to start working on more videos time permitting to start helping you towards your fitness goals. If you have a question, send it my way and I will do my best to address it.

Follow me on IG @cindylaneross for more videos!

A great quote I came across during my podcast hour at the gym
"It's better to be pulled by your dreams, rather than pushed by your problems."

A very interesting book I am reading this week- Eating Between the Lines

I hope everyone has a great week and as always I greatly appreciate your following along in my journey!

8 Weeks Out until show time and a recap of a busy week :)

Hi guys,
I hope everyone had a splendid Monday!
Just my update for the week...

So far breezing through contest prep, love the structure and happy to be back in the grind!
Cutting calories, upping cardio, and workouts are still strong.

One of my favorite quotes of the week!

Afternoon cardio session

Fun St. Paddy's Day with one of my besties! Gene Seymore, the door guy at Choppers!
There is a new sheriff in town 😂

I wrapped up my first thesis paper of the semester, Zac Brown Band concert, celebrated St. Paddy's Day and we got our yearly physical this past week.

I don't know why I am always a nervous wreck getting a physical, everything came back great and I would have to say I am the healthiest I have ever been. I took myself off of Humeria a little over a year ago and decided to see if I could manage my Rheumatoid Arthritis with diet and exercise.

16 months later my joints feel great, managing the pounds, lifting heavy ass weights, and not looking back!
Thanks, Fran, this has become my favorite shoulder exercise!

I feel so blessed to be studying my passion and sharing what I learn with my clients, definitely exciting times and looking forward to how many people I can help with balancing hormones and combating auto-immune diseases.

My thesis paper is on Phytoestrogen Foods Help Menopausal Women Naturally Balance Hormones.
Check out my site on this topic- https://www.lifewellnessforever.com/phytoestrogens

I'm also gearing up to launch Life Wellness Forever's podcast in the coming months- topics will vary on nutrition, fitness, hormone balancing, fad diets, autoimmune diseases, chronic illnesses and more! If there is something you would love to learn more about, I would love to know!

Top 8 Weeks out 2018

Here is my 8-week check-in. Huge difference in the backside from last season, Thanks Christian Simmons for the great coaching!
