Five of the Most Frequently Asked Gym Questions

Five of the Most Frequently Asked Gym Questions

When joining a new gym it is normal to have many questions in order to feel comfortable about the workout environment. We all want to look our best in the shortest amount of time but may need more assistance in order to reach our goals.

1. For any personal trainer the #1 question asked by new members is: "How quickly will I see results?"Ok people let's be honest... the more you apply yourself the quicker you will see results. However we are discussing modifying the body's physique. Therefore no person no matter how amazing their genetics are, no one will see results overnight. But a weekly workout routine will yield positive results you and everyone else will see changes beginning in about 2 weeks.

2. Another concern new beginners have is, "Will I be shown how to use the equipment?" Fitness center employees and personal trainers will always give new and seasoned gym members full explanation of proper equipment technique. The purpose of a gym is it improve your body's size and overall health. No gym wants anyone to get hurt by misuse of equipment.

3.  "Should I lift weights first or do cardio exercise first?" This is a common question that many personal trainers get. However this question can best be answered by the client. Your personal goals are what dictate the style of workout best to produce the results you want. Discuss your goals with a personal trainer in order to have the best workout built to reach your goals.

4. One of the questions on any gym members mind is, "How long will the results last?" Well let's think about this question. When you maintain a healthy energetic lifestyle you will retain a fit, tone, healthy looking body. So if you stop going to the gym or slow down on daily exercise your body's metabolism  can slow down causing the body to retain water and fats. Therefore think of the gym as part of your lifestyle and you will have lasting results.

5.  Lastly, the question that should never be on our minds but is, "Can I cancel my membership at any time?" First, why would you want to cancel? You want to achieve your goals and reaching those goals means making a lifestyle change. So nix this question from your mind. However if other factors cause such as job relocation cause the need for membership cancellation, discuss this with your gym manager.  Every gym has different rules regarding membership and cancellation. It is helpful to know your gym's policies when signing a new membership.

8 Tips for Youthful Glowing Skin

8 Tips for Youthful Glowing Skin

Skin aging is the result of many external factors. However, there are ways to prevent the degenerative process. Here are some factors that speed up the skin aging process and here is some helpful tips to combat skin aging.
  1. Stress-Stress is a known cause of aging. Stress causes pressure and tension on your body also causing cells regeneration to slow or stop. Stress can leave your face tense causing wrinkles. In situations of high stress the body can produce more of the hormone cortisol which can damage collagen and elastin and decrease the skin's ability to repair itself. In order to prevent stress from increasing the aging process  exercise regularly and find an outlet of relaxation such as yoga, painting, and crafting. Whatever your stress reliever, apply that hobby to your daily or weekly routine to reduce stress.
  2. Sweets-Too many sweets are unhealthy for your body and can cause the breakdown of the fibers that support your skin. In order to prevent sweets from aging your skin curb your consumption of candy, cookies, doughnuts, or other simple carbohydrates such as white bread and rice. If you must indulge your sweet tooth having a small piece of dark chocolate is best for your body. Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants which can protect you from free radicals.
  3. Frequent Flying-Frequent flying is known to cause health risks and dry skin. This is due to being closer to the sun and intense high altitudes. Therefore, if you must fly lather your skin in a sunscreen moisturizer or your favorite sunscreen. This will protect your face from solar rays and help your skin retain it's natural moisture.
  4. Sleep-Lack of sleep puts your body into stress mode which causes your body to release stress hormones. In order to prevent skin aging due to lack of sleep allow yourself to get a full REM cycle while you sleep. Anywhere between 6-7 hours of sleep is sufficient.
  5. Depression-Depression can be caused by many life related issues such as work, relationships, financial burdens etc. However, people cannot always change their situations rapidly. Therefore the number one way to have more confidence is through exercise. Exercise releases endorphins in the brain preventing negative mood signals to be transmitted. Talking to a medical professional is also helpful in more severe situations.
  6. Over Exercising- Regular exercise is healthy and reduced stress. But over exercising has been found to be unhealthy and can wreak havoc on your body. Over exercising can cause joint damage and loss of skin support structure. Therefore, a balanced exercise routine and skin protection can keep the body young and healthy.
  7. Weight Change- Weight fluctuation can take its toll on the skin's elasticity. Aim to keep a healthy normal body mass index ranging from 18.5 to 24.9. Your local gym or personal trainer can help with an assessment of your BMI to insure your within a healthy range.
  8. Moisture Loss-As we get older our bodies begin to produce less estrogen causing less oil and collagen production in the skin. The best ways to prevent this natural collagen loss is by using heavy moisturizer or consulting a doctor regarding hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

The Putting Place

As Promised by the Fat  To Fit Radio Show...

The Putting Place!

Carlos Serrano brings back miniature golf to the Mobile community! The previous attraction Funtasia Miniature Golf closed down several years ago. Carlos was an undergrad at the time saw the potential the place had. He knew the place would thrive and was needed in the community due to the lack of attractions and family friendly activities in the area. Carlos decided to revive the place by putting some TLC and giving the place a major face lift. He's built a fun place to bring your friends and family to play 36 holes of miniature golf. He plans to have league tournaments, host fundraisers for charities, and of course have birthday parties at the new Putting Place. Carlos also has a Pita Pit food truck that will be occasionally be on site to offer delicious food. In addition, he said is hopeful the establishment will eventually be licensed to sell beer on premises, but he does not expect to clear any associated hurdles in time for the August opening. The grand opening for the Putting Place will be August 7th. Thanks for coming on the Fat to Fit Radio Show Carlos it was a pleasure having you and we look forward to seeing the new place and playing a round of golf very soon!

10 Reasons You're Not Losing Weight

As Promised by the Fat to Fit Radio Show...

10 Reasons You're Not Losing Weight

1. "Healthy Foods"
Every major chain restaurant has adopted a "healthy foods menu" it has confused the average person trying to change his or her eating habits for the better. It's easy to think that choosing a salad over a steak is the better option. However, when that salad is loaded with cheese, croutons, bacon, and heavy dressing, it can rival any high calorie food on the menu. When choosing a salad option, choose to hold the dressing on the side and be sure that you don't request all the trimmings that can easily take your low calorie food into high calorie, high fat territory.

2. Skipping Meals
If you skip too many meals, over time your body begins to hold on to every calorie you consume. In short, your body begins to hoard and store the calories you put in because it is convinced that you may be going into starvation mode otherwise. Eat more small meals throughout the day. Instead of one or two large meals, eat five or six small meals that consist mainly of fruits, veggies, and protein.

3. Being Cold
If you're anemic you can't help being a bit chilly most of the time. But, when you are chronically cold, you run the risk of wanting foods that are warm, soothing and hearty to help warm you. However, most of those hearty foods are also high in calories. This is an easy fix. First, find the real reason for your constant cold condition. If you're anemic, see if you need to supplement your iron intake. If that's not the case, then layer up. Carry a sweater and make sure you dress for the weather. If you live in a colder climate, add a workout to your normal routine and eat more calories in the form of a high protein snack.

4. Not Getting Enough Sleep

When you don't establish a regular sleeping pattern, your body is sent into a hormone wreck. Your leptin levels, which reduce appetite, are lowered and your ghrelin levels, which increase appetite, are raised. The result? Your lack of sleep contributes to overeating and indulging, when all you really need is more sleep. Go to bed 30 to 45 minutes before you normally would and continue building more sleep into your nightly routine.

5. Eating Too Fast
Eating too fast is a major culprit in over-eating. Once you begin eating, you need at least 15 to 20 minutes to begin to process food and feel somewhat full. Scarfing down a meal in under six minutes may have been a great thing for frat guys to brag about in college, but it has no place in the food habits of the healthy.Take time to savor your food and slow down. Be sure to enjoy a meal away from the computer or television to ensure you reasonably pace yourself.

6. Munching In Front Of A Screen
Regardless if it's a computer or television screen, when you are distracted by what's being shown it's easy to lose track of how much you are eating. Sit at the dinner table and allot a decent amount of time (usually 30 minutes will do) for your meal.

7. Using Large Plates
Using large plates are a recipe for disaster on your diet. The problem with large plates is that most people feel the urge to fill those plates with food. Larger plates means larger portions and larger portions mean more calories and more chances to over-eat. Use a medium to small size plate for all your meals. You'll consume less calories and your eyes won't notice the difference

8. Scale Back

When you weigh yourself daily or worse, several times a day, you create an environment where you are constantly in turmoil over every fluctuation you see. While it is helpful to maintain your weight with some monitoring, constant monitoring is more harmful than helpful. Set a day and time to weigh yourself and stick to it. Know that your weight will change throughout the day so weighing yourself at the same time weekly, will give you more accurate and comparable results.

9. Stress
Some people respond to stress by eating less and others respond by eating more. Either way, stress is a surefire derail to your healthy habits. Cortisol is raised when you're stressed and that can lead your blood pressure and sugar levels to become out-of-whack. Once that happens, the chances of over-eating increase. Indulge in things that help you relax. Reading, listening to soothing music and yoga are excellent ways to de-stress after a long day.

10. Your Friends
When you hang out with people, do you tend to eat more? Do you eat different types of foods? Monitor your eating habits when your environment changes and notice if you're the type of person who's eating habits change dramatically with the company that you keep. Don't turn into a recluse in order to keep to your diet. Do choose your foods wisely and, when possible, bring your own food to
dinner parties—share your healthy and delicious dishes.

Never give up on your weight loss journey! Stay dedicated, motivated, and follow these tips to help you along the way!

7 Reasons to Seek Marriage Counseling

As Promised By The Fat To Fit Radio Show....

7 Reasons to Seek Marriage Counseling

1. Communication has become negative. Communication is key to every relationship. Negative communication often leads to feelings of depression, insecurity, and wanting to withdraw from the conversation. The tone of the conversation can have a lot to do with it too. It is important to remember that it’s not always what you say, but how you say it.
Negative communication can also include any communication that not only leads to hurt feelings, but emotional or physical abuse, as well as nonverbal communication.

2. When one or both partners consider having an affair, or one partner has had an affair. Recovering from an affair is not impossible, but it takes a lot of work. It takes commitment and a willingness to forgive and move forward. There is no magic formula for recovering from an affair. But if both individuals are committed to the therapy process and are being honest, the marriage may be salvaged. At the very least, it may be determined that it is healthier for both individuals to move on.

3. When the couple seems to be “just occupying the same space.” When couples become more like roommates than a married couple, this may indicate a need for counseling. This does not mean if the couple isn’t doing everything together they are in trouble. If there is a lack of communication, conversation and intimacy or any other elements the couple feels are important and they feel they just “co-exist,” this may be an indication that a skilled clinician can help sort out what is missing and how to get it back.

4. When the partners do not know how to resolve their differences. When a couple begins to experience discord and they are aware of the discord, knowing is only half the battle. Many times I have heard couples say, “We know what’s wrong, but we just don’t know how to fix it.”. This is a perfect time to get a third party involved. If a couple is stuck, a skilled clinician may be able to get them moving in the right direction.

5. When one partner begins to act out on negative feelings. I believe what we feel on the inside shows on the outside. Even if we are able to mask these feelings for a while, they are bound to surface. Negative feelings such as resentment or disappointment can turn into hurtful, sometimes harmful behaviors. I can recall a couple where the wife was very hurt by her husband’s indiscretions. Although she agreed to stay in the relationship and work things out, she became very spiteful. The wife would purposefully do things to make her husband think she was being unfaithful even though she wasn’t. She wanted her husband to feel the same pain she felt, which was counterproductive. A skilled clinician can help the couple sort out negative feelings and find better ways to express them.

6. When the only resolution appears to be separation. When a couple disagrees or argues, a break often is very helpful. However, when a timeout turns into an overnight stay away from home or eventually leads to a temporary separation, this may indicate a need for counseling. Spending time away from home does not usually resolve the situation. Instead, it reinforces the thought that time away is helpful, often leading to more absences. When the absent partner returns, the problem is still there, but often avoided because time has passed.

7. When a couple is staying together for the sake of the children. If a couple feels it is wise to stay together for the sake of the children, it may help to involve an objective third party. Often couples believe that they are doing the right thing when staying together actually is detrimental to the children. On the contrary, if the couple is able to resolve issue and move toward a positive, healthy relationship, this may be the best decision for all involved.
