Protein and Weight Loss

Let’s talk about Protein and Weight Loss.

Protein is an essential macronutrient - in other words, a compound in food that provides calories and other nutritional benefits.

As the builder macro, protein helps grow, shape, repair, and maintain every cell in your body - even your blood cells and DNA.

Roughly 15% of your body (including skin, hair, nails, and other tissues) comprises proteins.

Proteins are also responsible for much of the work inside your cells since protein is a critical component of hormones, enzymes, and other chemicals you produce to live and function normally. It even plays a role in your immune system and the digestion of your food.

And because protein is a macro, it provides energy in the form of calories. Although, it is less of a preferred fuel source for fitness and day-to-day compared to carbs and fat - mainly because your body will prioritize protein for all the other essential functions it needs. But if you eat plenty of protein, some of it will be used for fuel.

All proteins comprise long chains of smaller, essential compounds called amino acids that serve as the building blocks for your body. And these amino acids are why protein is considered an essential nutrient.

Here are 5 reasons why protein can help you lose weight:

1. IT SATISFIES & SAVES CALORIES

Protein is important because it helps you feel fuller and longer. Having protein around slows digestion, making us feel more satisfied and less likely to return for seconds. If this happens over multiple days, your calorie savings can help lose weight.

2. IT CURBS CARB HIGHS AND LOWS

I don’t know about you, but when I come off a sugar high onto a sugar low, I can make food decisions I’ll later regret. Pairing protein with carbohydrate-rich foods slows down the absorption of sugar from your stomach into your bloodstream, which may help keep your blood sugar from skyrocketing and ward off future cravings.

3. IT REQUIRES MORE OF YOUR ENERGY

The “thermogenic effect of food” (TEF) is the energy we digest food into small, absorbable components. Protein has a higher TEF than carbs and fat, meaning you’re burning more calories to process protein than to process the other two.

4. IT FUELS FAT BURNING

It may be surprising, but it is a scientific fact that your body cannot effectively burn and use fat as energy if it doesn’t have help from either carbohydrates or proteins. As you are losing weight, your body loses both muscle and fat. During this process, you must continue to eat enough protein in your diet. Having adequate protein from your food fuels fat-burning while preserving calorie-burning lean muscle.

5. IT PROMOTES MUSCLE REPAIR & GROWTH

Your protein needs increase, especially after bouts of intense exercise so increasing your protein intake on days that you exercise is beneficial. Additionally, if you strength train consider having a high-protein snack right after a training session when the muscle is sensitive to nutrients that it can use to repair and grow.

One important thing to realize is eating more protein alone won’t necessarily help you healthily shed excess weight. When consumed in excessive amounts it can still lead to weight gain much like eating excess carbs or fat would and could put unnecessary strain on the kidneys over a long period of time.

How Much Protein for Weight Loss?

Protein intake recommendations vary based on several factors, including age, weight, gender, and activity levels. However, adults are often encouraged to consume at least 25 to 35 percent of total daily calories from protein sources.

High-Quality Protein Diet for Weight Loss

Along with consuming adequate protein, achieving recommendations through high-quality products is imperative. So instead of choosing bacon, hot dogs, or other processed meats, opt for the following lean meats and fish to reduce unwanted fat, salt, and additional preservatives:

• Beef Sirloin: 19 grams per 3 ounces

• Chicken: 17 grams per 3 ounces

• Eggs: 6 grams per 1 medium egg

• Shrimp: 19 grams per 3 ounces

• Tilapia: 23 grams per 1 cooked fillet

• Tuna: 25 grams per standard can

Peak week 2019 and life!

Thank you for all the likes and comments from this post over the weekend...

#1 POST OF THE WEEK!

"There is no excuse. There is no finish line. I had a conversation with a client this week about putting yourself first. Make yourself #1 priority. Be selfish. Say “NO”. Create boundaries. Learn discipline. Be in love with yourself.

The girl on the left was battling for her life with a disease she didn’t know much about. After losing my mother, my father and my brother I knew something had to change. You can be on the good side of genetics or the bad side of genetics. Wake up with passion and be the best possible version of yourself. Whatever you are battling, fight it with every ounce in your body.

Don’t just accept a diagnosis and lie down, stand up and make yourself proud. Celebrate every second of life. Be your own inspiration."

It’s Never too Late to be Great- How I Rose Above Auto-Immune Disease to Compete in My First Contest

Thank you Beverly for the feature in your publication-
From No Nonsense Magazine- Vol 23 #1

I hope to inspire everyone to live to their fullest and happiest potential. I tell people of all ages, —“It’s never too late to be great.” You can rediscover yourself at any time. We all have setbacks in life, but you just
have to pick yourself up and start believing that you can begin to live your best life now. Since I learned to control my disease with nutrition, exercise, and proper supplementation, at the age of 41, I have never
felt stronger and more alive. Bodybuilding has reshaped my body and improved my quality of life. I recently met my 16-year-old self again at the age of 40 and even though the journey has had a lot of bumps and bruises, I’m still here, and I’m smiling because I am alive and looking forward to the sunrise of each new day.

This past week just staying focused on school, contest prep, and balancing work.
Finished up Eating Between the Lines- Definitely should check it out, will open up to your eyes on how you grocery shop and what to look for.

5 Week Check-In
Top 5 weeks out from Battle on the Beach 2018
Bottom 5 weeks out from Battle on the Bluff 2019

When I started on this journey about a year ago, I just trusted the process. I left the cardio room and hit the weights. I began eating more calories per day than I used to consume in a week.
Here are the results after 1 year of weight training...

To all the women who are scared to lift weights, it's the only way to achieve your fitness goals.

Thankful every day for a great workout partner!

1 Week Out... It's Peak WEEK :)

It's finally here... PEAK WEEK! All the hard work, discipline, and consistency is ready to hit the stage on Oct. 20.
Celebrated 41 Years on Saturday.

                       227lbs- Feb. 2006                   120lbs- Oct. 16, 2018
It doesn't matter what obstacle you have in your life, anything is possible... Just set your mind to it and watch the magic happen.

This week has been great and we even made it out to the National Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama and watched a beautiful sunset on the beach.

Some days feel like Groundhog Day, although I'm thankful for the routine especially on the lower energy days. Week 3 Keto and here is my Sunday check-in

Top is Oct. 7 and Bottom is Oct. 14

I have completely fallen in love with this sport. This whole process has been amazing, I am not saying easy... I like the HARD days, it's all about the challenge even when you want to give up!

I told my coach today, I'm sad to see it come to an end on Saturday, but excited for putting on more muscle and staying lean during the OFF-SEASON.

Everyone keeps asking me, what will I eat after the show? Honestly, I'm not a foodie and I don't need anything dirty. I want a higher carb meal and then after a rest day on Sunday you will see me right back in the gym hitting the weights. With less cardio of course and more life until the next prep, but excited to jump right back in.

Hubby bought these for my birthday... LOVE!
I haven't really celebrated my birthday yet, I figured I would wait and toast Jason with a cocktail after the show... we booked a little trip over to NOLA to celebrate our anniversary and my birthday both of which fell during my prep :)

Although I did enjoy my special day...
I worked out and trained as normal, went for a manicure/pedicure and enjoyed a beautiful sunset evening from our boat dock all while counting my blessings.

I'm excited to share with you the results from the Battle on the Beach Saturday, Oct. 20. I will do my best to post on Sunday.
Follow me on Facebook & Instagram... lots of live videos and pics coming soon!

If you are interested in attending, the show is at the Erie Myer Civic Center in Gulf Shores, AL
The afternoon show starts around 1pm after intermission.

Thanks for following along with me during this journey!

XOXO,

Final 2 Week Push...

A few days late posting, but better late than never :) (Words to LIVE by)

My personal goals-
My personal goal was to be in the best shape of my life when I hit 40... well that didn’t happen! I was in the worst shape due to travel, stress, work, and the list goes on. I’m closing in on 41 this upcoming Saturday and I’m proud to say, I’m in the best shape of my life. Never give up, that’s the secret!
The pic on the left is this past March while cruising around the Polynesian Islands weighing 167, and today weighing in at 121. I hit the reset button and it feels good.
The best gift you can give yourself is HEALTH! Happy Birthday to me, I just added years to my life by just deciding to meet my personal goals. You can do it too!

When I decided on this journey back in June, I thought it was the best Birthday present I could give myself. Make your Birthday month be your very best.

Since I started back weight training May of this year, Versagripps have made all the difference. My good friend Tony Kennon suggested them to me because I had a hard time gripping the weights due to my Rheumatoid Arthritis. I have been able to put on good upper body muscle for the first time since getting sick at 19 years old.

5 Weeks until the OCB Battle on the Beach Competition

I'm a few days late posting but the prep is going well. Headed into week 2 of KETO :) I saw this picture just when I needed it most!

One year ago we were traveling through India and I was the heaviest I have been in a long time. Actually started making myself believe it was ok to miss workouts and eat whatever I wanted. Stress with work, travel, not enough time for workouts, hormone imbalance, and the list goes on for the 40+ LB weight gain.

Fast forward to Sunday 9/16/18, I'm the fittest I have been in my life and slowly approaching 41 in a few weeks, needless to say... super proud moment! It's really amazing how 1 year can make a difference, mentally and physically.

You can't expect different results, doing the same thing day in and day out. Working on yourself should be your #1 priority!
KETO is going well, won't lie some days the energy just isn't there but you find it.  Push yourself and you just may be surprised at what you're capable of.

One of my favorite meals, salmon & 1 cup of green vegetables.

Check out my friend Jill in the background, making our AM workouts count! Jill is competing in the Figure division and I will be competing in the Bikini division. Come out on Oct. 20 and see us in action.

Look what arrived this past week, I tried it on and it doesn't fit... "they" say if it fits now it will be too big when it's time to compete, so not freaking out yet!

It's even more gorgeous in person! Thanks, Muscle Dazzle!

Being on HIGH Fat & HIGH Protein, finding ripe Avocados in Orange Beach is a task in itself...lol
Between this and Sweet Leaf Stevia drops, my apologies if these are on your shopping list.
#mystaples

My guy supports me day in and day and day out, he puts together our workouts so I don't have to think about it.
Jason even went to the gym 7 days in a row with me just to make sure I had support xoxo

Sunday's back workout.

Consistency has been my motto throughout this process.

Check-in time with my coach...

Pumped after seeing the year progress pictures.

Thanks for taking the time to read and supporting my journey. I look forward to catching you up next weekend.

10 Reasons You're Not Losing Weight

As Promised by the Fat to Fit Radio Show...

10 Reasons You're Not Losing Weight

1. "Healthy Foods"
Every major chain restaurant has adopted a "healthy foods menu" it has confused the average person trying to change his or her eating habits for the better. It's easy to think that choosing a salad over a steak is the better option. However, when that salad is loaded with cheese, croutons, bacon, and heavy dressing, it can rival any high calorie food on the menu. When choosing a salad option, choose to hold the dressing on the side and be sure that you don't request all the trimmings that can easily take your low calorie food into high calorie, high fat territory.

2. Skipping Meals
If you skip too many meals, over time your body begins to hold on to every calorie you consume. In short, your body begins to hoard and store the calories you put in because it is convinced that you may be going into starvation mode otherwise. Eat more small meals throughout the day. Instead of one or two large meals, eat five or six small meals that consist mainly of fruits, veggies, and protein.

3. Being Cold
If you're anemic you can't help being a bit chilly most of the time. But, when you are chronically cold, you run the risk of wanting foods that are warm, soothing and hearty to help warm you. However, most of those hearty foods are also high in calories. This is an easy fix. First, find the real reason for your constant cold condition. If you're anemic, see if you need to supplement your iron intake. If that's not the case, then layer up. Carry a sweater and make sure you dress for the weather. If you live in a colder climate, add a workout to your normal routine and eat more calories in the form of a high protein snack.

4. Not Getting Enough Sleep

When you don't establish a regular sleeping pattern, your body is sent into a hormone wreck. Your leptin levels, which reduce appetite, are lowered and your ghrelin levels, which increase appetite, are raised. The result? Your lack of sleep contributes to overeating and indulging, when all you really need is more sleep. Go to bed 30 to 45 minutes before you normally would and continue building more sleep into your nightly routine.

5. Eating Too Fast
Eating too fast is a major culprit in over-eating. Once you begin eating, you need at least 15 to 20 minutes to begin to process food and feel somewhat full. Scarfing down a meal in under six minutes may have been a great thing for frat guys to brag about in college, but it has no place in the food habits of the healthy.Take time to savor your food and slow down. Be sure to enjoy a meal away from the computer or television to ensure you reasonably pace yourself.

6. Munching In Front Of A Screen
Regardless if it's a computer or television screen, when you are distracted by what's being shown it's easy to lose track of how much you are eating. Sit at the dinner table and allot a decent amount of time (usually 30 minutes will do) for your meal.

7. Using Large Plates
Using large plates are a recipe for disaster on your diet. The problem with large plates is that most people feel the urge to fill those plates with food. Larger plates means larger portions and larger portions mean more calories and more chances to over-eat. Use a medium to small size plate for all your meals. You'll consume less calories and your eyes won't notice the difference

8. Scale Back

When you weigh yourself daily or worse, several times a day, you create an environment where you are constantly in turmoil over every fluctuation you see. While it is helpful to maintain your weight with some monitoring, constant monitoring is more harmful than helpful. Set a day and time to weigh yourself and stick to it. Know that your weight will change throughout the day so weighing yourself at the same time weekly, will give you more accurate and comparable results.

9. Stress
Some people respond to stress by eating less and others respond by eating more. Either way, stress is a surefire derail to your healthy habits. Cortisol is raised when you're stressed and that can lead your blood pressure and sugar levels to become out-of-whack. Once that happens, the chances of over-eating increase. Indulge in things that help you relax. Reading, listening to soothing music and yoga are excellent ways to de-stress after a long day.

10. Your Friends
When you hang out with people, do you tend to eat more? Do you eat different types of foods? Monitor your eating habits when your environment changes and notice if you're the type of person who's eating habits change dramatically with the company that you keep. Don't turn into a recluse in order to keep to your diet. Do choose your foods wisely and, when possible, bring your own food to
dinner parties—share your healthy and delicious dishes.

Never give up on your weight loss journey! Stay dedicated, motivated, and follow these tips to help you along the way!

Tips for Reducing Belly Fat

As Promised By The Fat To Fit Radio Show...

Tips for Reducing Belly Fat

We all want to have a flat stomach and washboard abs. Nobody wants to have annoying belly fat but the truth is everyone has it even the people who have abs. Belly fat is normal too much belly fat is not. These tips will help you say adios to that extra belly fat! The fat stored around our waist is one of the most dangerous in terms of health. If not checked, it can lead to several health problems like, stroke, heart disease, metabolic issues and diabetes. The best way to rid yourself of belly fat is through exercise and the key is your nutrition. The quote abs are made in the kitchen is the truth. If you have patience, change your lifestyle, and make some sacrifices with your diet you can reduce that belly fat.
Here is some helpful tips to help guide you.

1. Don’t Eat Sugar

Sugar is half glucose, half fructose and fructose can only be metabolized by the liver where sugar is converted to fat. Excess sugar, mostly due to the large amounts of fructose, can lead to an increased amount of fat in the belly. Avoid drinking sugary beverages like soft drinks and fruit juices.
Keep the fruit and ditch the processed sugar.

2. Protein

High-protein foods take more work to digest, metabolize, and use, which means you burn more calories processing them. They also take longer to leave your stomach, so you feel full sooner and for a longer amount of time.If weight loss is your goal, then adding protein to your diet is perhaps the single most effective change you can do. If you struggle with getting enough protein in your diet, then a quality protein supplement (like whey protein) is a healthy and convenient way to boost your total intake.

3. Cut Carbs

Carb restriction is one of the best and most effective ways to lose fat. Cutting carbs makes your appetite go down and helps you lose weight. Low-carb diets also lead to quick reductions in water weight and often you see the results fast. There are also studies comparing low-carb and low-fat diets, showing that low-carb diets specifically target the fat in the belly, and around the organs and liver.

4. Fiber

Fiber is a compound that only plants contain. The fiber we consume from plant foods is called dietary fiber. Eating healthy high-fiber foods makes you feel full, so you can resist eating more food than you need. The best way to get more fiber is to eat a lot of plant foods like vegetables and fruit. Legumes are also a good source, as well as some cereals like oats.

5. Aerobic Exercise

Aerobic exercise will assist in weight loss due to the amount of calories that are burned. Exercise is important for various reasons. It is among the best things you can do if you want to live a long, healthy life and avoid disease. Aerobic exercise (like dancing, running, swimming, walking, etc) has been shown to cause major reductions in belly fat.

6. Track Yourself

What you eat is important.Tracking your weight, calorie intake, and exercise levels will make you a more successful dieter. When people track their weight and food intake they usually lose weight, eat less, and exercise more. Self tracking also helps goals become easier to achieve and helps you see how fast you are progressing.
