5 Labs Your Doctor Isn’t Ordering (But Should Be)

Most people walk out of their doctor’s office feeling reassured…

“Everything looks normal.”

But here’s the truth—normal doesn’t always mean optimal.

Standard lab ranges are designed to diagnose disease, not prevent it. By the time something falls outside of that range, dysfunction has often been building for years.

If you want to truly take control of your health, you have to look deeper.

Here are five labs I recommend regularly in my practice that are not routinely ordered—but can completely change your health trajectory.

1. Fasting Insulin: The Early Warning Sign

Most providers check glucose or A1C. The problem? Those are late-stage markers.

Fasting insulin shows us what’s happening behind the scenes.

You can have normal glucose levels and still be insulin resistant—a condition that drives:

  • Weight gain
  • Inflammation
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Increased risk for diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and cancer

Optimal Range: 2–6 ยตIU/mL

If your insulin is elevated, your body is already working too hard to maintain balance.

2. hs-CRP: Your Inflammation Marker

Inflammation is at the root of nearly every chronic disease we see today.

High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) gives us a snapshot of what’s happening internally—even when you feel “fine.”

Optimal Range: <1.0 mg/L

Elevated levels can point to:

  • Gut dysfunction
  • Chronic stress
  • Poor diet
  • Autoimmune activity
  • Hidden infections

This is one of the simplest markers with the most powerful insight into long-term health risk.

3. Vitamin D: More Than a Vitamin

Vitamin D plays a critical role in immune function, hormone balance, and cellular health.

Yet most people are walking around insufficient—or being told their levels are “fine” when they’re not optimal.

Optimal Range: 60–80 ng/mL

Low levels are associated with:

  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Weakened immune response
  • Increased cancer risk

The good news? This is one of the easiest markers to optimize.

4. Homocysteine: The Hidden Risk Factor

Homocysteine is rarely discussed—but incredibly important.

It reflects how well your body is performing methylation, a process essential for:

  • Detoxification
  • Brain function
  • Cardiovascular health

Optimal Range: 6–8 ยตmol/L

Elevated homocysteine may indicate:

  • B vitamin deficiencies (especially B6, B12, folate)
  • Increased risk of heart disease and stroke
  • Impaired detox pathways

If you’re dealing with brain fog, fatigue, or cardiovascular concerns, this marker matters.

5. Full Iron Panel: The Missing Pieces

Too often, patients are told their iron is “fine” based on a single number.

But iron metabolism is complex—and requires a full panel to understand:

  • Ferritin
  • Serum Iron
  • Iron Saturation
  • TIBC

Why this matters:

You can have low iron symptoms with normal or elevated ferritin—especially in the presence of inflammation.

Or, you may have iron overload, which is rarely caught early.

This panel gives insight into:

  • Energy production
  • Oxygen delivery
  • Inflammation status
  • Overall metabolic health

Why This Matters

If you’ve ever been told “everything looks normal”… but you don’t feel normal—you’re not imagining it.

You’re just being measured against ranges that aren’t designed for optimization.

These labs allow us to:

  • Catch dysfunction early
  • Personalize nutrition and supplementation
  • Prevent disease instead of reacting to it

This is the difference between reactive care and proactive health.

Final Thoughts

You are your best advocate.

Ask better questions. Request deeper testing. Pay attention to how you feel—not just what your labs say.

Because true health isn’t about being “within range.”

It’s about being fully optimized, energized, and thriving.

If you want help interpreting your labs or building a personalized plan, that’s exactly what I do inside my programs at Life Wellness Forever.

Sunlight, Longevity, and the Science of Light: How Daylight Adds Years—and Darkness Protects Them

As the mornings stay darker and the evenings creep in earlier, it can feel like our rhythm is slightly off. Science says that feeling is real. Light—both sunlight and the artificial glow after dark—acts like a silent conductor for our body’s internal clock, hormones, mood, metabolism, and even life expectancy.

And here’s the wild part: sunlight can lower your risk of early death by up to 34%, while bright light at night can increase it by a similar amount. Light is medicine—but only when we use it at the right time.

Why Sunlight Matters for Longevity

Sunlight is one of the most affordable and powerful longevity tools available. When used wisely, it:

  • Sets your circadian rhythm (your internal clock for sleep, hunger, hormones, and energy).

  • Boosts vitamin D, which supports bones, immune strength, and lowers inflammation.

  • Improves mood by raising serotonin levels—your body’s natural antidepressant.

  • Lowers blood pressure and supports heart function, thanks to nitric oxide released during UV exposure.

  • Enhances immune defenses and cellular repair, especially when light exposure is consistent in the morning.

A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that people who get more daily sunlight reduce their risk of premature death by 17–34%. That’s the power of light—when it's aligned with nature.

The Dark Side: Light at Night Speeds Aging

Even small amounts of light at night—think phone screens, TV glow, or streetlights creeping through blinds—can interfere with melatonin production, disrupt your circadian rhythm, and impair how your body repairs itself while you sleep.

Researchers found that exposure to bright light between 1:00–6:00 a.m. increases the risk of early death by about 34%, and cardiometabolic death by up to 67%. This is because nighttime light:

  • Suppresses melatonin (your sleep and cancer-protective hormone)

  • Disrupts metabolism and blood sugar regulation

  • Increases inflammation

  • Alters cortisol and hormone balance

  • Weakens immune function

Protect Your Nighttime Light Hygiene

Light at night is the enemy of longevity. Here’s how to guard your darkness:

  • Invest in blackout curtains or wear a sleep mask

  • Dim overhead lights after sunset—especially harsh LED lights

  • Use warm, amber, or red lights in the evening (salt lamps, amber bulbs, candlelight)

  • Avoid screens 1–2 hours before bed, or at least turn on blue light filters/night mode

  • No scrolling before morning sunlight—let real light, not screen light, set your rhythm

Morning Sunlight is Your Daily Reset Button

If you only do one thing for your longevity this fall—get morning light.

  • Within 30–60 minutes of waking, go outside or sit by a bright window for 10–15 minutes

  • Morning sunlight tells your brain: “It’s daytime—make energy, balance hormones, and set the clock.”

  • It boosts serotonin, which converts to melatonin at night, helping you fall asleep naturally

  • It protects against mood dips, seasonal depression, and insomnia

Balancing Sunlight with Skin Safety

You don’t have to sunbathe for hours—just be smart:

  • Aim for 10–30 minutes of natural, unfiltered sunlight in the morning before 10 a.m.

  • If you're outside longer: use SPF 30+, hydrate, wear a hat or protective clothing

  • Avoid peak UV hours (10 a.m.–3 p.m.) if you burn easily

As the Days Get Darker: How to Adjust with the Seasons

When daylight saving time ends and nights arrive early, your internal clock can fall behind. Here’s how to realign:

HabitWhy It Helps
Morning light dailyResets your circadian rhythm and boosts mood/hormones
Keep evenings dimAllows melatonin to rise naturally
Eat earlierSyncs digestion with daylight cues
Embrace darker nightsUse it as permission to slow down, read, journal, or meditate

Final Thought

Light is one of the simplest longevity tools we have—it costs nothing, requires no prescription, and yet it impacts our lifespan more than most people realize. This season, let morning sunlight set your rhythm… and protect your nights like your future depends on it—because it does.

Supplement Sunday

Supplement Sunday-
Integrative Therapeutics K2 + D3 combines the benefits of two essential fat-soluble vitamins—Vitamin K2 and Vitamin D3. Together, they support cardiovascular health, bone strength, and overall wellness. Here's an overview of the benefits:

1. Cardiovascular Support*
Promotes arterial health: Vitamin K2 helps direct calcium away from arteries and soft tissues, supporting proper blood vessel function and preventing arterial calcification.
Supports heart health: Balanced calcium levels contribute to improved cardiovascular function.

2. Bone Support*
Improves calcium absorption: Vitamin D3 enhances the absorption of calcium from the diet, ensuring adequate levels for bone formation and maintenance.
Supports bone density: Vitamin K2 activates osteocalcin, a protein essential for binding calcium to bones, which strengthens bone density and reduces the risk of fractures.

3. Synergistic Benefits of K2 and D3
Optimal calcium utilization: These vitamins work together to ensure calcium is absorbed effectively and used properly within the body.
Minimizes calcium misplacement: Prevents calcium buildup in the wrong places, such as arteries, while directing it to bones and teeth.

4. Additional Health Benefits
Immune system support: Vitamin D3 helps modulate the immune system, promoting a balanced immune response.

Improved muscle function: Vitamin D3 supports muscle strength, reducing the risk of falls in older adults.

This supplement is particularly beneficial for individuals seeking targeted support for cardiovascular and bone health and those at risk for calcium-related disorders. It’s ideal for people with limited sun exposure, poor dietary intake, or health concerns requiring supplementation.

Lower Blood Pressure: Surprising Study

There is now a new natural weapon to combat against the growing population of high blood pressure sufferers.

Now this new weapon is as close as your backyard.

What I am talking about is good old sunlight.

Blood pressure levels are commonly higher during winter months.

The question you may ask is what is the mechanism that allows sunlight to lower blood pressure?

British researchers have figured out why.

The answer is nitric oxide (NO).

Nitric oxide is known to reduce blood pressure by evoking vasodilation either directly by causing relaxation of vascular smooth muscle or indirectly by acting in the rostral brainstem to reduce central sympathetic outflow, which decreases the release of norepinephrine from sympathetic nerve terminals.

Basically, nitric oxide increases the elasticity of the artery walls and helps to normalize high blood pressure.

An increasingly large body of literature suggests that alterations in the NO system may play an important role in the development or maintenance of clinical hypertension.

What they found is that nitric oxide stored in the top layers of the skin reacts to sunlight and causes blood vessels to widen as the oxide moves into the bloodstream. That, in turn, lowers blood pressure.

According to researcher Martin Feelisch, a professor of experimental medicine and integrative biology at the University of Southampton, exposure to ultraviolet light might help reduce the risk for heart disease.

"This new study finds that UV light exposure to the skin induced nitric oxide release and modestly lowered blood pressure, suggesting that this may play a role in modulating blood pressure," said Fonarow, a spokesman for the American Heart Association.

In 2009, a team led by the University of Edinburgh's Richard Weller showed that human skin and the dermal vasculature contain significant stores of NO—much more than can be found circulating in the blood—and that these stores could be mobilized by UVA (long-wave UV) irradiation.

“This study provides suggestive evidence that skin-derived NO metabolites may have a role in modulation of blood pressure upon UV exposure,” Thomas Michel, a professor of medicine and biochemistry at Harvard Medical School.

Vitamin D And Functional Medicine

Today I want to talk about Vitamin D

What does Vitamin D do for us?

Why is vitamin D important?

1. Reduces risk of cancer

2. Supports your bone density

3. Suppresses inflammation

4. Supports your immune system

5. Supports your heart

1. The most efficient way to get Vit D is to lay with your bare skin in the early sun (approx 15-20 minutes daily, it’s important to not burn).

2. Test your Vit D levels regularly because genetics have a big impact on your Vit D levels and how you respond to supplements as well as sunlight. If you supplement with Vit D, please work with a functional medicine doctor to make sure the dosage is right.

3. Supplement with Vitamin D, depending on your levels you will need to add in 1000-5000 IUs a day. Remember it’s extremely important to know how your body is absorbing vitamins and nutrients.

What are you doing to get your Vit D?

Cancer And Functional Blood Chemistry Analysis

Let’s talk cancer…

Did you know there are cancer patterns to be on the lookout for?

Low levels of HDL(your good cholesterol) are associated with an increased risk of future cancer along with a pH imbalance and a low Vitamin D.

When you have a low HDL, low Vit D, and a pH imbalance, your body is a breeding ground for cancer.

If you knew you could prevent cancer, would you take the necessary steps? This is why having a functional blood chemistry analysis done is so imperative for your overall health.

There are things you can start implementing today, increase your monounsaturated fats, drink apple cider vinegar, and get your sun time in along with the right supplementation.

Also for men over 50, low Vitamin D levels double your risk for colorectal cancers.
