Eight Tips for Running with Diabetes

As promised by the Fat To Fit Radio Show...

Tips for Running with Diabetes
"Walk like you have three men behind you." -Oscar de la Renta

1. Check with your Doctor first. People with diabetes should always check with their healthcare providers before deciding to become more physically active beyond walking. Good health is primary and you want to make sure that you are not at risk for cardiovascular, orthopedic, or other problems.

2. Walk First Then Run. Start by walking and build into running. Walk purposely for about a half an hour then combine walking and jogging, and steadily increase the jogging.

3. Footwear is important. Buy shoes that fit well and are appropriate for running. Talk with an expert and do your research before buying a good pair of shoes.

4. Dress Accordingly. Always wear a reflective vest if you are walking or running at night. The best way to dress while walking or running is in layers. A good way to help with perspiration is to wear absorbent materials close to the skin and wear an outer layer to help protect you from the wind and other elements.

5. Find a good Support Person/Workout Partner. Join a community running group to meet people with the same interest. Invite a friend, neighbor, or colleague and go for walks or jogs during your lunch break. If running a marathon is something that interests you plan to do it with someone who has the experience and has done it before.

6. Set a Goal. Plan a head and set goals for yourself. No matter how big or small for example a five-kilometer road race for charity.

7. Managing your Diabetes. Stay on top of measuring your blood sugar before and after the activity (and during it, if needed). Pack a head a juice, a sports drink, a piece of fruit, or glucose tablets. Keep up with a training log that records your miles and your glucose readings.

8. Listening to your body's needs. Starting slow, being consistent, and managing your diabetes are the best way to see progress with your health and fitness.

The Fat to Fit Radio Show with Cindy Lane Ross & Larisa Dixon

Larisa and I had the opportunity to have an amazing guest and old time friend of mine on the Fat to Fit Radio show this morning. If you missed it we talked to the amazing ultrarunner Kelly Agnew of Slipping Slowly Into Pain.

Kelly just completed the White Rim Trail 100 miler UNASSISTED! Yeah with no help or aid along the course. This was what they call an FKT (Fastest Known Time) attempt. The previous record was 27 hours. Kelly finished it in 21:52, over 5 hours quicker than the record. AMAZING!

What makes Kelly's story so unique is that he wasn't always a runner. I met him on vacation years ago and he then decided he was going to start running. Who knew he was going to become one of the best ultrarunners around. To read more on Kelly check out his blog at Slipping Slowly Into Pain.

Fat to Fit Radio has a lot of really awesome things happening soon, so stay tuned.
Make sure you check us out on FACEBOOK, TWITTER, and INSTAGRAM

Happy Thoughts.... running, friends, and life!

I hope everyone had a great week.. not even going to lie, this week I felt the stress of our new gym opening and those deadlines are screaming down my throat. I have been needing new runners and by the time I am done with work everyday, I am too tired to stop by my favorite running store Run-N-Tri.
After a very hectic Wednesday and Thursday, stopped in and look at my goodies.
These Brooks feel like a million bucks. I have some pain in my right foot that I have been fighting since Jan, and these shoes really support my arch.... happy feet!
Aaron wanted me to try out these Asics Gel- Exert Cross-trainers... He says they give a lot of support for classes like Boot Camp & Cross-fit.
Tried them yesterday afternoon and the support they provide when doing my HIIT workout was so much more than I get with my runners. Use your running shoes to run in, that's it! When your husband asks, "Cindy, why do you need a pair of shoes for each activity?" You tell them that shoes are designed to support you doing that specific activity. So ladies, don't feel bad for having multiple pair of shoes, rejoice in the fact that you are that active and need a variety of shoes for support :)

and I must not forget my dear Swiftwick friends, if you haven't tried these socks.. you are missing out. The way they hug your feet and give you support during your workouts, AhhhhhhhMazing!

Let me get back to my run, so I strap on my new runners, and let me tell you, I could have run 4EVER! After the week I had, I belted out 8 miles like it was nothing. It reminded me of how much Running is my Therapy! For you runners out there, you know what I am talking about. After a run, you can throw anything my way and I can handle it. Wednesday, Jason calls and I am venting, he says, "baby, YOU SHOULD GO FOR A RUN!" If you know whats good for you, allow me time to run daily...lol!

My good friend Trey drops in for a visit, haven't seen him since returning from deployment in Afghanistan. Life is so busy and we are caught up with our own things, it's nice to be reminded of true friendships.

I must update you on my bird Fiona.. I am so in love with this little guy!
Who knew there were so many options for a bird cage when it comes to toys.. I am most positive Fiona felt like it was Christmas. Let me tell you my funny story... as I am cleaning his cage and arranging his new items, Fiona decides to take flight for the first time since I brought him home. Remember, my dog Matilda is petrified of cats and unsure of what the bird is, but knows she should be scared. Fiona meows like a cat, so Matilda thinks the cats are inside all the time. Well, when Fiona took flight, guess where he landed, on top of Matilda.. My dog was like this......

Xmas shopping for my Fiona
It was the funniest thing ever, so now Fiona is getting comfortable, he just waddles around the kitchen and is now hanging out on Jason's shoulder :)
Jason & Fiona, please excuse Jason's appearance,
been working on new Facility..lol

Yesterday was this distinguished man's birthday, my daddy! He turned 70 and definitely doesn't look like it. He is my Willie Nelson. I am so thankful to be in  his life celebrating this milestone with him.

I hope everyone has an awesome weekend! And remember when Life throws you lemons....

Cindy Ross's Tips on Training for Adventure Racing

Cindy Ross’s Tips for Adventure Racing-
Most adventure racers workout five to six days a week, varying their workouts based upon what types of events they’ll be doing in a particular adventure race.
Running is a good way to build aerobic capacity.  Also, get used to doing a variety of sports–biking, paddling, running. Log some miles and don’t skimp on your training–you’ll be sorry on the race course.
Give your body 16 weeks of training to prepare for the race. Use the first 10 weeks to master each skill needed to complete the race. Once you get to week 11, you can start trying to increase your time for better results. The week before the race, start tapering down your training, rest, and prepare for race day.
Tips to become a good paddler-
Paddle with your arms locked completely straight throughout the entire stroke. This forces you to use your torso and midsection for power (via the back and forth twisting and untwisting of your body, much like a washing machine rotor) versus relying on your manly arms. Make sure to do lots of core training and row like exercises. Ex. Weighted bar rows
Get out on the water…in kayaks and in canoes. Try different boats and positions. You need to get out at least once a week.
Tips to become a good runner-
Start slow and make sure you are using proper form so you do not injure yourself.
It is very important to have good shoes, and be fitted by an expert. If you end up with blisters and shin splints, your body will not be happy on the race course.
Try to increase your mileage each time you run, the more the better! You should build up to long runs of about 13 miles.
Tips to become a better biker-
Most of your training for an adventure race should be on a mountain bike on mountain bike trails. Weekends are probably the best for this training but you should start with some 5-10 mile trail rides and build up to 30 mile rides. Weekly mileage should be between 25-50 miles.

Guidelines-
-Train like a triathlete because that is what an adventure race sort of is (Joel Friel's Triathlete's Training Bible)
-Use a good recovery drink for post workout - I like Endurox R4
-Get lots of sleep
-Drink at least 1.5 liters of water every day; the more the better
-If you can, get a weekly message to work out the soreness and lactic acid buildup
-Don't forget to stretch
-Perform weight training and endurance training on separate days if possible.
