Fish Window Cleaning & The Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc

Fish Window Cleaning &
The Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc

The Cindy & Larisa Show had the pleasure of having Jennifer Magli on with us. Jennifer owns a window cleaning business called Fish Window Cleaning. Fish Window Cleaning's services are locally owned & operated. They service both commercial and residential, offer a free estimate, and they are licensed, bonded, and insured, and satisfaction is always guaranteed. Jennifer also told us about the upcoming event she is participating in called The Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc. This is an all women's race through Sahara desert in the Southern part of Morocco and was first created in 1990. 300 women participate in the event with either ATV, motorbike, or Baja style off road vehicles. The only requirement is determination. The women who take part in this rally are known as Gazelles. They are of all ages, social backgrounds, nationalities and levels of off-road experience. The Rallye is completely off-road; its course is redesigned every year. The Gazelles have to reach the predefined checkpoints along their course in the least number of kilometres, rather than in the least amount of time. They have the choice of driving around a mountain or crossing over it, driving through the dunes or avoiding them. Every day they receive a "Road Book" for the day’s course. This document contains only the geographic coordinates, headings and distances of the day’s checkpoints and finish line. Using a compass, a navigational plotter and maps, they plot their route and plan their itinerary. An average day of competition is 10 to 13 hours long. We want to wish Jennifer the best of luck in the event and for all your window cleaning needs give Fish Window Cleaning a call at (251) 378-5800!

In the Kitchen with Bodies By Cindy
Get Fit with Bodies By Cindy

I have been on a few National Radio Interviews

Starting tomorrow I will be a regular on America's Morning News every Tuesday @ 6:45am Central

I always like getting the positive out first, now for the bad... last Saturday night my father which is a Type 1 Diabetec was at the Casinos and he went into Cardiac Arrest and died for 4 minutes. After they revived him it led to life support and a coma. Being in Biloxi Regional for 36 hours, they told us dad would be a vegetable and have heart damage. I got my father transferred back to Mobile into Providence Hospital. Dad came off life support and woke up, had a heart cath on Tuesday and a triple bypass with a stint on Tuesday. A wonderful group of doctors working on him, big shout out to Citrin, Rhiner, and Gupta. Dad has been in CCU since Monday and yesterday morning his blood pressure crashed to 56/32 and we found out he has a blood clot in the lungs. After everything he has been through, his attitude is wonderful and he is happy he is alive. He will remain in CCU for another week and we all hope he continues to recover.

This is a picture of a will to live and having a purpose on this earth! I love this man! My dad is stable in CCU at providence and all doctors say he is a very lucky man!

He is definitely my Motivational Monday!

I hope everyone had a fabulous Monday!

xoxo,
Cindy Lane Ross

Fat to Fit Radio Recap- All of our tips for back to school & much more!

We hope you enjoyed the show this morning. Here is a recap of the things we talked about. And if you missed it, you can head over to our Podcast and listen to today's show and all of our past shows.

We talked about going back to school and keeping our kids and family healthy.

15 Ways to Get Your Kids to Eat Better
A nutritionist who's also the mother of 7-year-old triplets gives tried-and-true tips for getting your child to eat vegetables, drink milk, try new foods, and more.By Julie Burns, R.D. from Parents Magazine
  1. Make a schedule. Children need to eat every three to four hours: three meals, two snacks, and lots of fluids. If you plan for these, your child's diet will be much more balanced and he'll be less cranky, because he won't be famished. I put a cooler in the car when I'm out with my kids and keep it stocked with carrots, pretzels, yogurt, and water so we don't have to rely on fast food.
  2. Plan dinners. If thinking about a weekly menu is too daunting, start with two or three days at a time. A good dinner doesn't have to be fancy, but it should be balanced: whole-grain bread, rice, or pasta; a fruit or a vegetable; and a protein source like lean meat, cheese, or beans. I often make simple entree soups or Mexican chili ahead of time and then freeze it; at dinnertime, I heat it up and add whole-grain bread and a bowl of cut-up apples or melon to round out the meal.
  3. Don't become a short-order cook. A few years ago, I got into a bad habit. I'd make two suppers -- one that I knew the kids would like and one for my husband and me. It was exhausting. Now I prepare one meal for everybody and serve it family-style so the kids can pick and choose what they want. Children often mimic their parents' behavior, so one of these days, they'll eat most of the food I serve them.
  4. Bite your tongue. As hard as this may be, try not to comment on what or how much your kids are eating. Be as neutral as possible. Remember, you've done your job as a parent by serving balanced meals; your kids are responsible for eating them. If you play food enforcer -- saying things like "Eat your vegetables" -- your child will only resist.
  5. Introduce new foods slowly. Children are new-food-phobic by nature. I tell my kids that their taste buds sometimes have to get used to a flavor before they'll like the taste. A little hero worship can work wonders too. Marty refused to even try peas until I told him that Michael Jordan eats his to stay big and strong. Now Marty eats peas all the time.
  6. Dip it. If your kids won't eat vegetables, experiment with dips. Kathleen tried her first vegetable when I served her a thinly cut carrot with some ranch salad dressing. My children also like hummus, salsa, and yogurt-based dressing.
  7. Make mornings count. Most families don't eat enough fiber on a daily basis, and breakfast is an easy place to sneak it in. Look for high-fiber cereals for a quick fix. Or, do what I do and make up batches of whole-grain pancake and waffle batter that last all week. For a batch that serves five, sift together 2 cups whole-wheat pastry flour, 4 tsp. baking powder, 1/2 tsp. salt, and 2 Tbs. sugar. When you're ready to cook, mix in 2 Tbs. ground flax meal, 2 cups water, 3 Tbs. canola oil, 1/4 tsp. vanilla, and 2 Tbs. applesauce.
  8. Sneak in soy. Even if your kids don't have milk allergies, soy milk is a terrific source of healthy phytochemicals. My kids don't like soy milk but don't notice when it's hidden in a recipe. I use the low-fat, calcium-fortified kind in some recipes that call for milk, such as oatmeal, mashed potatoes, and sauces.
  9. Sprinkle some sugar. Julia eats her cooked carrots with a bit of brown sugar, and I mix a little root beer into her prune juice to make prune-juice soda. Kathleen and Marty like a sprinkle of sugar on their fruit. I know that they'll eventually outgrow this need for extra sweetness, but in the meantime, they're eating fruits and vegetables.
  10. Get kids cooking. If your children become involved in choosing or preparing meals, they'll be more interested in eating what they've created. Take them to the store, and let them choose produce for you. If they're old enough, allow them to cut up vegetables and mix them into a salad. Although Julia refuses to eat fresh fruit, she and I make banana or apple muffins together -- and she always eats them once they're done.
  11. Cut back on junk. Remember, you -- not your kids -- are in charge of the foods that enter the house. By having fewer junk foods around, you'll force your children to eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and dairy products.
  12. Allow treats. Having less healthy foods occasionally keeps them from becoming forbidden -- and thus even more appealing. We call candy, soda, and cookies "sometimes" foods. I generally buy only healthy cereals such as Cheerios and Raisin Bran, but I let my kids have sugary cereals when they visit their grandparents or when we're on vacation. And I treat them to McDonald's for lunch every so often.
  13. Have fun. The more creative the meal is, the greater the variety of foods my kids eat. We make smiley-face pancakes and give foods silly names. (Broccoli florets are "baby trees" or "dinosaur food.") Anything mini is always a hit too. I often use cookie cutters to turn toast into hearts and stars, which the children love.
  14. Be a role model. If you're constantly on a diet or have erratic eating habits, your children will grow up thinking that this sort of behavior is normal. Be honest with yourself about the kinds of food messages you're sending. Trust your body to tell you when you're hungry and when you're full, and your kids will learn to do the same.
  15. Adjust your attitude. Realize that what your kids eat over time is what matters. Having popcorn at the movies or eating an ice-cream sundae are some of life's real pleasures. As long as you balance these times with smart food choices and physical activity, your children will be fine.

NDeckerRunner
Nicole - Baton Rouge LA

I started running in 2011 as a way to maintain my weight loss from a size 16 to a size 8 . I signed up for my first half marathon the Rock ‘n’ Roll New Orleans Marathon in which I completed in February 2011. I find keeping the weight off is just as challenging as losing the weight to begin with but by changing it up, setting new goals and rewarding yourself keeps yourself motivated. Last October as I was turning 40 I decided after 10 Half Marathons it was time to start training for my first Full. I asked for my families support and I went after it. On 2-2-14 I crossed the finish line feeling EXHILARATED! I accomplished something I never thought possible. Since I started my journey I have completed 1- Full Marathon,10- Half's, 3-10miler, 5- 10k's, 25- 5k's, 1-mudrace, 3 trail runs (2-5ks & 1 Half Marathon), 1 sprint Triathalon,1 sprint Duathlon, & 3 Paddleboard races. Experiences & friendships made= Priceless!! I want to keep going and encourage others to do the same. I am a wife, mother and I work full time so balance is key but I want to show others that it can be done. Next ups is my 1st Relay event at the 70.3 IM Augusta, GA for this September with my friends Larisa (YES, that's me) and Laura.

Hey guys we hope you all listened to the show this morning on News Talk Radio 710AM or on IHEARTRADIO. If you missed it you can listen to todays show and past shows on our podcast HERE

We talked about a lot this morning, so here is a recap and links to pages we talked about...
Nerd Fitness Blog Traveling tips...
Whenever I get to a new town, my first mission is to go for a walk and find one of three things:

  • A pull up bar or swing set
  • A sturdy tree branch
  • A building or bus stop overhang
Localeikki - App that helps you find places to workout when you travel
Have you ever been traveling & just wanted to find a good place to run, walk or ride? Or maybe you had a workout to do and would enjoy jumping into a local group’s training session if only you could find one?

That’s why we created localeikki. We want to help people be active no matter where they are. localeikki is a database of recreation locations that are publicly accessible and locally recommended.
localeikki is a riff off of the concept locavore: loca for local & leikki means play in Finnish—play local. Our goal is that the business not only helps people be active, but also encourages information sharing of great places to be active. Did someone tell you about a good place to be active? Play it forward by sharing the great public places to run, bike, & play in your hometown.

Airport Workouts

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, Texas (DFW)
An airport big enough to have its own ZIP code had better have some good exercise options, right? The
Grand Hyatt DFW hotel (connected to International Terminal D) has a 24-hour rooftop pool and a fitness center that offers Life Fitness Cross Trainers, exercise bikes, treadmills, free weights, weight machines, and a steam room. A day pass (for the pool and gym) is $33. “That’s a small price to pay to know I got a good workout in before I get on an eight-hour flight,” says Gillotti.

LaGuardia Airport, New York (LGA)
Most gyms aren’t attached to the airport, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore them during a long layover. “When you start getting into a three-hour window, that’s when you can grab a taxi, go get a workout, and then get back through security,” Gillotti explains. Just a 3-mile cab ride from New York City’s most central airport, the
Rock Health and Fitness Club in Astoria, Queens, boasts 30,000 square feet with a boxing studio, isometric equipment, and the real highlight, a 30-foot rock-climbing wall. A day pass costs $20.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
In early 2012, a 150-square-foot storage room in Terminal 2 was converted into a relaxing yoga studio that’s free to all ticketed passengers — the first of its kind in the world. (Fun fact: SFO designed its own “yoga” icon since it didn’t exist in the guide of airport pictograms.) Even better, there are no cell phones allowed.
FlySFO.com

Minnesota-St. Paul International Airport (MSP)
It may not have fancy equipment, but the busiest airport in the upper Midwest has something the others don’t: a 1.4-mile walking loop through the main terminal, clearly marked with overhead signs. The track opened as part of the American Heart Association’s Start Walking program in 2007.
MSPAirport.com

Fort Lauderdale / Hollywood International Airport (FLL)
Take a 10-minute taxi ride to the
World Gym East Fort Lauderdale. The $10 guest pass includes a locker.

Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW)
Located in the Edward H. McNamara Terminal, the
Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport hotel’s state-of-the-art WestinWORKOUT gym lets you use free weights, treadmills, stair machines, and exercise bikes for $15 per day. Fun fact: Should you desire to stay overnight in the Westin, you can get a room equipped with a stationary bike or treadmill, plus a medicine ball, fitness mat, and Pilates DVD.

Vancouver International Airport (YVR)
For $18, you can spend your layover in the
Fairmont Vancouver Airport hotel’s recently-upgraded workout room. It overlooks the U.S. departures area, so it’s designed for people-watching. In addition to the usual array of fitness equipment (rowing machines, treadmills, etc.), you can do wet laps in the three-lane pool (with self-adjusted current). Join the Fairmont President’s Club (free) and you’ll even be able to rent Adidas workout gear or an MP3 player

Sky Harbor Airport PHX
Free 1 mile Fitness trail located in Terminal 4 clearly marked with blue line and has a views of surrounding mountain ranges. Also equipped with water bottle fill stations.
